What is the Vagus Nerve?

The super powerful vagus nerve meanders throughout your body, connecting your brain to the rest of your organs, and transmitting information back and forth between them. As a matter of fact, the name “vagus” actually means “wandering” in Latin. Also known as the 10th cranial nerve, the vagus runs through your neck, chest, and stomach, and without it, you couldn’t perform a number of essential bodily functions.

Which Bodily Functions Require the Vagus Nerve?

Almost everything you do relates back to the vagus nerve, from the ability to taste food on your tongue to breathing — the nerve is what your brain uses to tell your lungs to work! Some other bodily functions that relate back to the vagus nerve include:

  • Heart rate
  • Reduction of anxiety after a stressful situation
  • Recovery from injury or illness
  • Guidance for the muscles in your neck to move properly so you can swallow and talk
  • Manages the digestive tract so you can urinate or defecate
  • Sexual arousal
  • Decrease in inflammation in your body
  • Blood pressure

Stimulation of the Vagus Nerve

Though testing is still being completed, the US Food and Drug Administration allows vagus nerve stimulation for the treatment of depression and epilepsy when neither disease responds to medications. This is done by using a device that sends electronic pulses to the nerve. Trials and research are also being completed to determine whether this type of stimulation can help resolve other health issues like anxiety disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, addiction, obesity, heart failure, and migraines and severe headaches.

In recent years, researchers have discovered that vagus nerve stimulation may also reduce or prevent inflammation in the body, which could resolve many health issues. Some initial trials have shown that cureless diseases like rheumatoid arthritis may even go into remission when a device is implanted into the body to send pulses to the nerve. Because of these findings, doctors are now studying the effects of other electric impulse devices on other body parts in order to treat disease without using so many harmful medications.

4 Simple Reasons Why You Experience Brain Fog

In a fast-paced world it seems more common than ever to experience bouts of confusion, forgetfulness or just the inability to focus. Often these lapses in clarity are symptoms of a larger issue. Brain Fog is a state in which your brain experiences a state of overload and has trouble communicating its immediate needs to the rest of your body. Though this occurrence is not a disease in itself, it can be a symptom of other issues or conditions. The majority of these issues are easily treated with the right program. Take a look at some of the most common causes of brain fog and how we can help.

  1. Diet Choices

Glucose, a form of sugar, is the most vital source of energy for cells in your body. The human brain being the most energy-demanding organ in the body uses approximately half of all sugar energy in the body. This makes the balance of ingested glucose essential to a proper diet. An imbalance of glucose in the brain commonly leads to poor attention and impaired cognitive function.  Severe glucose imbalances are often linked to different types of diabetes as well as cognitive decline in older adults.

  1. Chronic stress

Stress levels play an active role in the body’s ability to function at an optimum level. Experiencing higher amounts of stress affects the way your brain operates, as well as the hormones that it produces. Under more stressed conditions, the brain responds by producing higher levels of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is responsible for keeping you feeling alert and awake while other hormones like serotonin and dopamine are responsible for keeping you happy and calm. The over production of one particular hormone can cause an over-all imbalance that results in experiencing brain fog.

  1. Lack of exercise

Surprise! Balanced exercise is vital in overall health. It is believed that on a cellular level, a leading cause of brain fog is inflammation. Inflammation is caused by overactive immune system function and is tied to multiple mental disorders. Exercise helps lower inflammation while also helping to maintain a healthy hormonal balance. Finding the right exercise to rest ratio is a key aspect of combating brain fog and ultimately living a healthy lifestyle.

  1. Inadequate sleep schedule

Getting better sleep is one of the most reliable means to improving brain function and overall well-being. Getting adequate amounts of rest is essential in maintaining a proper hormonal balance. 7 – 9 hours of sleep is suggested for most adults.

“Bringing Sexy Back” – Cleanse CRAZE!

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
“I’m Bringing Sexy Back”

This is still one of my favorite catchy tunes. It’s a great song by Justin Timberlake, but unfortunately “Bring sexy back” isn’t as easy as belting out some lyrics to your steering wheel.  If it was as easy as singing that song, I don’t think 2 out of every 3 people in America today would struggle with obesity!

If I had a nickel for every time I heard…………

“But Doc, I eat clean and exercise 3x’s a week and I can’t lose a pound!” Unfortunately, it is way more complicated than that.”

Is the whole world wrong?

Does eating healthy and exercise help?  Of course! How is it possible that you are exercising and eating right, yet STILL can’t lose that stubborn belly fat? Chemistry. One of the best ways to jump start chemistry and help it get back on track is a cleanse.   Think of the human body like a computer that runs 24/7 without any down time or an IT guy to update our software and remove all the malware.

Cleansing is reboot that helps reset and remove Malware.

There are some beneficial cleanses being advertised everywhere on the internet, but remember that not everything on the internet is true, and not every drug advertised has been evaluated or approved by the FDA.  There is system to helping the body get back on track and it must be done in the correct order.

Reduce inflammation in the gut.

We prefer shakes in this step. Shakes are good because your body doesn’t have to work hard to digest the food and grab as many nutrients as possible.

Heal the gut lining.

So many people present with Leaky Gut Syndrome!(link) If you start detoxing and your gut is leaking like an old sink in a 1890 farmhouse, then you are just recycling the garbage back into the system.  Which only makes you SICKER!

Destroy who doesn’t belong, but keep your allies.

This can mean parasites, yeast, bacteria,  or viruses that set up camp in your GI tract. It’s a perfect place to live, warm, moist and full of food.

Intercellular Detox.

Many cleanses can help around the cell, but very few work on what is *in* the cell.  It’s like having a beautiful Apple Pie but when you cut into it, it’s full of bolts.  Make the cell detox.  Remove all the toxins that are leeching off the cell.

Our cleanse/weight loss program will do just that: help detoxify you, lower inflammation, give you proper nutrients, and show you the correct way to eat.   Our cleanse has been a huge success for everyone involved and I invite you to “Bring YOUR sexy” back this year.

Balding Blues – Not Just a Problem for Men

As a man, there is nothing worse than losing your hair and balding.  Trust me I know!  Every man in my entire family, on both sides, doesn’t have hair – I was doomed from day one!  At first the thought of losing my hair drove me crazy. Thoughts and doubts constantly replayed in my mind, “am I still attractive?”, “does this mean I’m officially old?”, “what will my wife think??”, and mainly “WHY??!”; and then one day I just embraced it and decided to shave off what little I had.  I looked weird to myself and even to my wife but it soon grew on both of us.

I would sometimes feel down, but I know that while it is hard for a man to deal with hair loss, it is nothing compared to the emotions a woman goes through when faced with it. With these women, and their male counterparts, the main question is “why?” and “what can I do to stop this from happening?”.

Most women who start losing their hair automatically assume it must be their thyroid, because that’s what the almighty google or worse, WebMD Symptom Checker, tells them.  This can be a cause to hair loss in women, but it’s not the only cause and choosing to self-treat for this one cause can have negative effects.

Why the Hair Loss?

Estrogen dominance!  Estrogen becomes a bully and testosterone cowers in retreat. Yes; too much of one hormone causes another to drop!  Here is how it works:  All hormones are made from Cholesterol, and it gets converted into a chemical called prednisolone, which turns into DHEA, which turns into testosterone, which turns into estrogen.  I’m giving you the cliff note version of this.

If a woman’s body becomes dominated by estrogen, whether be it from stress, diet, thyroid, viruses, or Gi issues; the body will steal testosterone to make more estrogen.   This naturally creates a steady decline of testosterone in the body.

Many doctors and health care professions will either give testosterone or DHEA directly to supplement declining hormone.  Although this is sometimes effective at first; the body is no dummy.

Use it or loose it!  If you give the body the hormone for a long enough period of time, your body will simply stop making it.   The body is about conservation, not waste.

Another very common ‘cure’ is to give DHEA, and again, very effective at first, but something interesting happens with straight DHEA – it helps testosterone convert to estrogen faster!  Not what we want.  7 Keto DHEA is an excellent choice in this scenario because it does not let testosterone get converted to estrogen.

What causes the loss when you have a thyroid issue? Here are the Top 6:

  1. Ferritin is a major player in hair production. It stimulates the root of the hair follicle to grow. It is very common that hypo and hyper thyroid patients have very low ferritin and iron levels in their bodies.
  2. Low stomach acid Low stomach acid has been associated with decreased iron absorption. It has also been associated with leaky gut syndrome and other digestive disorders. When you absorb less nutrients, your body suffers.
  3. Autoimmune 80% of patients with thyroid problems are actually in an autoimmune state! In many cases the body gets confused and may attack another area of the body or many areas of the body.  Alopecia in particular, is an autoimmune disorder which directly affects the follicles of the hair, thus causing unnatural balding.
  4. Adrenal FatigueYour ‘fight or flight’ system, enough said! We are all way too stressed out, but that doesn’t change the issues our stress causes in our bodies. Again in a cliff note version, the body will steal the mother hormone prednisolone to make more cortisol.  Yes, the chemical that causes belly fat, leaving no room for it to make any DHEA to make testosterone.
  5. DietIt has been scientifically proven time and time again that high carb and high sugar diets make a complete mess of the body. They interfere with thyroid conversion and just about every other hormone. Eating is our chemical power plant and if you put junk in, you will get junk out.
  6. Other Drugs and ‘Supplements

Commonly used ‘vitamins’, diet pills, etc.

  • Acne medications containing vitamin A (retinoids)
  • Antibiotics and antifungal drugs
  • Antidepressants
  • Birth control pills
  • Anticlotting drugs
  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs
  • Drugs that suppress the immune system
  • Drugs that treat breast cancer
  • Epilepsy drugs (anticonvulsants)
  • High blood pressure medications (anti-hypertensives), such as beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Mood stabilizers
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Parkinson’s disease drugs
  • Steroids
  • Thyroid medications
  • Weight loss drugs

There is rarely a ‘one size fits all’ solution to your health.

The main point here is that there is rarely a ‘one size fits all’ solution to your health. Before you try every solution that worked for the most popular celebrity, or your friend at work; you owe it to your health to see a doctor who is committed to finding the actual cause of *your* body’s imbalances. Not just what the latest medical journals say, or what the pharmaceutical companies are pushing that month.

3 Causes of Headaches/Migraines That You Didn’t Know About

Headaches and Migraines are NOT Normal.

Having the privilege of being in practice for over 17 years while seeing tens of thousands of patient visits, I am amazed how often I speak with a patient about their history and when I ask if they get any migraines or headaches, more often then not, we hear: “ I get the normal Headache, 2-3 times per week.”

Any headache is the body’s way of telling us our system is under abnormal stress. Symptoms are only an indicator. Unfortunately, main street medicine only looks at these symptoms, addresses them, and believes the problem is solved. I have seen three common patterns in patients that I believe are the root causes of Headaches and Migraines: HORMONES, STRUCTURE and GUT.

Unfortunately for women, they lose out to men here. For every man with a Headache or Migraine, there are at least three women behind him with one. A woman’s hormone cycle is way more complex than their male counterpart. Women are also proven to be more sensitive to life’s toxins and stressors. Generally women hold their stress in their necks and shoulders, while men hold theirs in their stomach and low back. When a woman’s muscle tone becomes a very distinct, ropy and knotty feeling, I get a laugh when I ask them whether they are mid cycle or just started their cycle. Hormone changes often lead to Headaches and Migraines.

Our lifestyles are turning our spines into a leaning Jenga tower! Text neck is real and we are seeing its effects in children as young as 6 years old!! Our cervical spine (neck) should have a nice C curve. Commonly, because of traumas, lifestyle, and poor working habits we lose that C curve. Losing this curve creates pressure on the nerves entering the brain stem. The more loss of curve, the tighter the pressure becomes, and the more it pulls on the brain stem. This pressure causes more tension and is known to trigger a Headache or Migraine.

Our Guts (GI system) are a sensitive and complicated group of organs that amaze me every day. It is incredible how much our gut can impact our health. Three major impacts on our gut are:
1. The foods we eat – Food allergies and sensitivities impact our gut daily
2. The stress we face – We can NOT have stress without a normal working Gut
3. The medications we take – Antibiotics are the number one cause of throwing our GI system into out of whack and turning it into Swiss Cheese

Using a patient’s history to peel back the layers in an effort uncover whether you have a Hormone-Migraine/Headache, a Structural- Migraine/Headache, or a Gut- Migraine/Headache patient or any combination of the three and get you towards health! This is what we specialize in here at Sugar Hill Spine and Wellness. Have you been checked to see why you have Headaches or Migraines?

3 Secrets of Miraculous/Magical Weight Loss Stories

We’re constantly bombarded with ad after ad, commercial after commercial – all trying to get us to buy into the next weigh loss magic!

Every time I see an ad or marketing scheme promising fast results in a short amount of time for weight loss, I always think of the scene in the movie There’s Something about Mary when Ben Stiller picks up a hitchhiker who has a *brilliant* sales pitch: 7 Minute Abs! (As compared to the already on the market 8 Minute Abs workout videos). (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, click here for a pretty great laugh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB2di69FmhE) It kills me every time.

Joking aside, the sad part of that scene is that it’s not different at all in real life. We see it everywhere we look!

  • “Lose 30lbs in 14 days”
  • “7 days to a new you”
  • “4 days and10lbs guaranteed “

You get the point. ‘7 Minute Abs’ instead of ‘8 Minute Abs’. Each new fad has success stories showing how this person lost 100 pounds in 3 months or how she went from a size 12 to a 2 just by drinking this new supplement. There is so much more behind any weight loss story than just a magic pill, or a new diet, or just exercise alone. Just like a magic show, the results are real, but the process to get there is much more than meets the eye.  Once the illusion is revealed and you see how it was done, you can do it yourself.

I wish there was such a way to get those results in such a short time, but there isn’t. There are several studies out there that show when people lose such a dramatic amount of weight, their body fights to gain it (and plus some!) back because it shocked their system (feel free to look up previous winners of ‘The Biggest Loser’, you’ll be shocked).

What can we do to lose weight and keep it off?

My goal here isn’t to discourage you. So, if there’s no such thing as ‘magic’ weight loss, what can we do to lose weight and keep it off? In my practice and research, I’ve found that there are three keys to proper weight loss:

  1. Understand your Body First

If you’re struggling with your weight, it’s probable that you’ve tried everything. You’ve taken the pills, you’ve exercised, you’ve drank the green smoothies, etc. Some things have brought minor successes and others total failure.  Here are some questions you need to ask yourself to better begin understanding your body:

  • What foods work for me? (make me feel full without eating too much)
  • What foods inflame me? (make me feel bloated, sluggish, and are more fattening?)
  • What foods give me more long-lasting energy? (not just a sugar high and then a crash)
  • Which healthy foods do I enjoy? What can I substitute in my normal diet?
  1. It starts in the GUT

Research after research is showing that people with messed up GI (gastrointestinal tract) systems are overweight. Duke University did a study where they sterilized GI tracts of mice. They gave them bacteria that are believed to cause weight gain and BAM! The mice gained weight!  They gave the same mice proper bacteria (think ‘probiotics’) and then the mice lost the weight. Now, I know you are not a mouse, but our bodies were not made to ingest products that can survive a nuclear holocaust. If it can live on a shelf for more than a year…. Maybe you shouldn’t be eating it. There are thousands of natural alternatives for any processed foods you love and can’t seem to get enough of. (We would be happy to point you to them!)

Another interesting thing that was found in the study with the mice was that the heavier mice (the ‘bad bacteria’ mice – that sounds like a bad boy band… but I digress) gave birth to heavier babies, while the skinnier mice (the probiotic mice) gave birth to healthier babies. This leads us right into the next key to healthy weight loss:

Once the GI tract gets out of wack, it spills over to the cells.   Our cells dictate everything about our bodies. Each cell has millions of ‘locks’ on the outer-most layer to communicate with hormones and regulate our bodies.  Hormones like:

  • Insulin (controls how much sugar is absorbed/released, and therefore controls your energy levels.)
  • Thyroid (hyper- or hypo-, this hormone controls your metabolism)
  • Sex hormones (that’s right, your sex drive.)
  • Leptin (works in balance with Gernlin to regulate your hunger)
  • Gernlin
  • Adrenal (‘Fight or Flight’ hormone)

( Just to name a few)

If the ‘locks’ or ‘portals’ to the cells are inflamed or occupied by something else (like a toxin), the communication between the cells and the hormones goes down and, you guessed it, your body reacts accordingly. Things start to shut down or not work correctly.

MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION: What happens when to the cell when it cant get what it needs?

…It starts to behave differently and/or it dies.

There is no ‘magic’ in weight loss. Just like everything in life; we have to work towards our goals. The key to losing weight and keeping it off is finding the causes of the functional problems. Fix theses issues, understand your body, and educate yourself (remember: YOU are your biggest advocate! Don’t be afraid to ask questions!) and then you can work some real ‘magic’!

And if you ever need some help in your journey to a healthier you, your friends at Sugar Hill Spine and Wellness are here to help you!

5 Reasons Your Thyroid Issue Isn’t Really A Thyroid Issue

What functional labs told me that changed my career.

The thyroid is all the rage in healthcare nowadays, especially in natural healthcare. It seems like almost every health issue is blamed on the thyroid, but is it really? Are doctors picking a thyroid issue as their scapegoat because it’s easy, or because it’s truly the issue?

As a doctor, I am passionate about helping my patients truly identify the root cause of their issues. I am also passionate about thyroid health because I went through something personally about 6 years ago, which could have easily been blamed on the thyroid without any further digging.  I have gone from pain to purpose.

So here’s the cliff notes version of my story:  My shoulder was hurt and it would not get well.  Rehab only made it worse.  An MRI showed nothing.  I decided to get a natural Prolozone injection and a friend of mine thought I may have more going on.  He convinced me to run some tests.  Stool Test, Sex Hormones, Thyroid, Adrenals, and Food sensitivity.

Here are the results:

Before I share them, I want you to understand I was in great shape, I thought I was doing my best and that I was the picture of perfect health.

  1. Stool Test – 4 crazy strong parasites, which I believe I got from drinking river water in college.
  2. Hormone Test   showed that my testosterone levels were way too low. It was 248 and a man my age should have been in the 600 to 800’s.
  3. Other tests showed that I had high antibodies for Hashimotos Disease, an autoimmune disease that affects 80% of patients with existing thyroid issues!
  4. Food sensitivity – I had a gluten sensitivity! I’m Italian. I don’t need to tell you how devastating it is to hear that gluten is off limits! You try telling an Italian mother that you can’t eat her cooking. I also discovered I was sensitive to limes, lentils, and dairy. (Just kill me now, right?)
  5. Adrenals – Your ‘flight or fight’ hormones – Mine where in the basement!

As you can see, my thyroid issue was being driven by a number of other factors, not just one ‘simple fix’.  After studying this information for the last 6 years this is what I believe happened.

Tons of antibiotics as a child——-Parasites in college —— Work stress—–Leaky Gut Syndrome ——- Food sensitivities——— Autoimmune Thyroid—–Low Hormones

My thyroid was never the original problem!

Being prescribed medications or supplements would never have solved the problem.  The thyroid, and any issues with it, is a multi-faceted thing and must be addressed on an individual basis. There is no ‘one size fits all’ fix for thyroid problems, and we are committed to giving each of my patients the care and attention their health deserves.

After years of training, trial and error, and helping hundreds of patients with the same issues I had, I am confident that many people who are suffering or think they are suffering fro thyroid disease can be helped with a natural approach.  All it takes is hard work and a little education.  Remember, *YOU* are your biggest advocate when it comes to your health, don’t simply accept a prescription because a doctor wants to get you in and out of their office without really investigating the causes of your symptoms. I’m the proof in the pudding!

Thyroid issues are almost never just a thyroid issue! Come see me at Sugar Hill Spine and Wellness for compassionate, thorough, and natural care.

One Nerve, Many Duties, One Solution

Two words…Vagus Nerve. We live in a very exciting time. It seems like every day there is new research coming out of the medical world. I can’t keep up!  I mean, as fast information is being presented, it would take people, doctors, a full-time job JUST to keep up. It’s said that by 2018, all existing medical information will double every 24 hours and, by 2021, every THREE MINUTES! How in the world will we not only keep up but actually decipher what is good data and bad data?

My wife and I have dedicated our lives to finding and educating others on what is correct in the world of health.  My wife and I are also in the trenches seeing patients, so we get to understand what helps and what doesn’t from firsthand experience (ever notice it’s called PRACTICE?).

I am amazed at this research that has come out in the last 6 months or so. Science continues to adapt and expand to understand the body in ways we often knew where true but couldn’t prove on paper or in a computer. For example, new research has found that the gut and the brain are actually connected!

The information highway connecting the two is called THE VAGUS NERVE, aka Cranial Nerve X. This nerve exits the brain stem and is connected directly to the gut. We are just starting to understand the power of this connection and what sort of implications it will have on future research and practice. Just take a look at some of the amazing facts:

  1. The Vagus Nerve prevents INFLAMMATION

    • We know that 85% of the immune system resides in the gut. Once inflammation is present, the Vagus Nerve tells the brain to release some anti-inflammation chemicals to put out the fire. TOO much inflammation has even been proven to lead to autoimmune diseases and a host of other issues as well.
  2. It helps with MEMORY

    • I know I have your attention now. Just don’t forget this part. The University of Virginia found that stimulating the Vagus Nerve caused rats to have better memory and recall. Just think of the implications for humans!
  3. It stimulates BREATHING

    • The Vagus Nerve actually stimulates the chemicals that tell you to breathe. This can be thrown off if the Vagus Nerve gets over stimulated, but it can also be controlled and retrained with proper breathing and exercises.
  4. Butterflies

    • That roller coaster feeling in your stomach are a sign your Vagus Nerve is being stimulated. This is also one of the most common reasons people faint.
  5. It can CHILL you out

    • People with a more sensitive Vagus response have been shown to have stronger Vagus stimuli, which allows them to relax faster and more easily then those who do not.
  6. Can make you HAPPY

    • The neurotransmitters (the chemicals in your brain that control hormones) that make you happy and sad are produced 90% of the time by the gut. Since the Vagus Nerve has a VIP pass to the brain, it has a direct effect on emotions when stimulated.

That’s all great, but how can we help this super active nerve do its job better?

The Vagus Nerve can be positively influenced by a healthy diet, exercise, and meditation to name a few. But while these have all been proven effective ways to help the Vagus Nerve do its job better, one of the most effective ways is getting a chiropractic adjustment. But not just any adjustment! Not the kind you twist your own neck or have your girlfriend wrench on your neck (yes we get this in the office all the time). The most effective method is a specific upper cervical adjustment to the top bone of your spine, called the Atlas. We have seen amazing results with patients from an hour old to 95 years old doing this technique.

If you are tired of feeling stressed, difficulty breathing, and feeling a little blue, step out of the box and give this 100 plus year old profession a try.

See you soon,

The Vagus Stimulators

Drs. Joe and Deb

PART 2: Sunlight, Vitamin D & Sunblock

The American FDA dwarfs, in comparison to European countries, the number of toxic chemical that are banned from our foods and products.

You Must be your own health advocate. Sunscreen is a perfect example. Know what is in What You Put In You!!!   Is it healthy or not?  Here are just two common ingredients to be aware of.

  • Associated with endocrine disruption
  • Causes cellular level changes
  • CDC
  • It builds in the body, in the cell and mutates it.
  • According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) oxybenzone is ineffective and harmful.
  • Similar concerns have been expressed for related products including avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate.
  • Due to the advent of PABA-free sunscreens, oxybenzone is now the most common allergen found in sunscreens.

  • A study by U.S. government scientists suggests that retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight (NTP 2012).
  • Officials in Germany and Norway have cautioned that retinyl palmitate and other vitamin A ingredients in cosmetics could contribute to vitamin A toxicity due to excessive exposure (German BfR 2014, Norwegian SCFS 2012a).
  • The sunscreen industry adds vitamin A to nearly 16 percent of the beach and sport sunscreens, 14 percent of moisturizers with SPF, and 10 percent of all SPF-rated lip products in EWG’s 2016 sunscreen database.

Sunlight, Vitamin D & Sunblock

And on the 4th day, God created the sun to separate day from night. Do you Think He Gave us a Sun to Be Feared and that we should run and take cover from? I think not. We receive nourishment from the sun. Your body is usually able to get all the vitamin D it needs if you regularly expose enough bare skin to the sun. However, many people don’t get enough sunlight.

People who are likely deficient in Vitamin D :

Those with Dark Skin require more UVB exposure than light skinned people to kick start the body’s Vit D production. Those who are overweight. Body fat sops up Vit D, by decreasing the body’s bioavailability of the Vit. Older People are less efficient Vit D producers. Poor Air Quality diminishes Vit D production. Live further from the Equator and you will receive less UVB light. Spend time indoors and you will not receive any Vit D.

Why is Vitamin D important?

Vitamin D deficiency is an unrecognized epidemic among both children and adults in the United States, causing:

  • Rickets (Multiple cases of shaken baby syndrome proven to be Rickets from Vit D deficiency)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Osteomalacia
  • Increased risk of Cardiovascular Disease, M.S., Rheumatoid Arthritis & Type 1 Diabetes

Sunblock just may block the absorption of Vitamin D. And…WARNING: Traditional American sun blocks are chock full of toxic, carcinogenic chemicals.

How do I get the proper amount of Vit D and keep away from Toxic Sun Blocks?

  1. Determine your skin type & how much time you can safely spend in the sun without any block on your skin.
  2. Take a good Vit D supplement when you are not spending time in the sun. Try our Liquid Vit D for proper absorption and increased bio availability.
  3. Use natural sunblocks, such as Arbonne. Which is Dr Deb’s favorite and available in our store.
